ISLA Funding Opportunities

ISLA runs several grant programs that support faculty scholarship in a variety of ways. Click on each grant opportunity, below, for details regarding eligibility, restrictions, and review criteria. Funding decisions are selective and the Institute favors proposals that propose new projects that have not previously received funding from us.  

Research

  • Annual Research Theme: The Connected World - NO LONGER ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS

    Funding Amount: Up to $5,000

    This year we seek to facilitate scholarship that fosters deep analysis of the interconnectedness of social, cultural, political, and economic life around the globe.

  • Interdisciplinary Research Seed Grants

    Funding Amount: Variable, depending on activity

    Proposals accepted at any time except between June 1 and July 31

    This initiative is intended to promote collaborative research among faculty from different disciplines with shared interests and to support the preparation and submission of competitive proposals for external grants.

  • Large Research Grants

    Funding Amount: $2,500 - $15,000

    Biannual deadline dates are the second Tuesday in October and second Tuesday in February

    These internal grants can help fund preliminary work or data collection that may enable faculty to be more competitive for external grants and fellowships

  • Small Creative and Performing Arts Grants

    Up to $2,500

    Proposals accepted at any time except from June 1 to July 31

    This grant category is for proposals from regular faculty to support the creative and performing arts.

  • Small Research Grants

    Up to $2,500

    Proposals accepted at any time except from June 1 to July 31

    This grant category is for proposals from regular faculty for research travel, undergraduate summer student research assistance, research materials, and other costs of carrying out research

Publication

  • Publication Grants

    Funding Amount: Variable, depending on activity

    Proposals are accepted at any time except June 1 to July 31

    ISLA offers three types of grants to assist with the publication of peer-reviewed scholarly monographs. Grants are available to defray publication costs, subsidize the acquisition of images and permissions, and support professional indexing

Language Development

  • Faculty Language Development Grants

    Funding Amount: Up to $5,500

    Deadline is the first Monday in February

    This fund is designed for those who are already somewhat proficient in a language and want to enhance their skills based on goals related to research, scholarship, or creative works

Conference

  • International Conference Grants

    Funding Amount: Up to $1,000

    Submissions must be completed one month in advance of the conference. No post awards will be given.

    Partial support is available to faculty members who present a paper or poster at a professionally organized conference located outside of the United States.

  • Large Henkels Conference Grants

    Funding Amount: Up to $20,000

    Biannual deadlines: second Tuesday in October and February – October 11, 2022 and February 14, 2023.

    Grants of up to $20,000 to cover the costs of: an academic conference on campus or in one of the University’s Global Gateways, a series of lectures or performances, or a single, significant visiting lecturer or performer.

  • Small Henkels Lecture or Mini-Conference Grants

    Funding Amount: Up to $3,000

    Proposals are accepted at any time except June 1 to July 31. All proposals for a Small Henkels Grant must be submitted at least one month before the event.

    ISLA can provide partial support (up to $3,000) for academic conferences or lectures held on the Notre Dame campus.
