Application Instructions
ISLA offers three types of grants to assist with the publication of peer-reviewed scholarly monographs. Grants are available to defray publication costs, subsidize the acquisition of images and permissions, and support professional indexing. In all cases:
- ISLA’s goal is to substantially defray, rather than eliminate, publication costs. Cost-shares are expected from R&PD accounts, external grants, etc.
- Funding priority is given to assistant and associate professors. Advising, professional, and emeritus faculty are not eligible.
- Awards are limited to the first edition of any book; publication grants are not provided for re-prints, subsequent editions, or translations.
- Funding will not be awarded for anthologies, edited volumes, or open access fees.
- Support is awarded on a competitive basis and is not guaranteed. The quality and reputation of the press, the faculty member’s professional standing in the field, and the quality of the scholarly contribution will be considered.
Publication Subventions
Publication Subventions are funds that are directly given to publishers to offset the costs of book production and/or to lower the list price of books to increase dissemination of faculty work.
- Applications for Publication Subventions are submitted electronically and are only considered after a contract is offered by the publisher.
- The publisher will be required to complete a subvention worksheet that documents the anticipated production costs, print runs, and revenues.
- ISLA will negotiate a fair subvention with the publisher. While needs vary, ISLA’s subvention awards are typically less than $3,000. In more extreme cases, ISLA may not be able to meet the full subvention request.
- If awarded, the publisher must agree, in writing, that the funds will be returned to ISLA if the book is not published for any reason.
- If awarded, the faculty member must acknowledge publication subvention support in the acknowledgment of the book and provide ISLA with a hard copy of the book once published.
Imaging Grants
Image Grants are funds awarded to defray the costs associated with a book’s illustration program.
- Applications for an Image Grant are submitted electronically and are considered after a contracted book’s illustration program is determined.
- At the time of application, the faculty member must provide a list of images to be acquired and their associated costs.
- Image Grants are ordinarily limited to $2,000. In extraordinary cases where the cumulative image costs exceed this limit, faculty members may discuss an exception with the Institute Director before submitting an application.
- The image grant sum is intended to be less than the total cost of the illustration program. At least 20% of the costs must be funded from other sources such as a faculty member's R&PD funds, external grants, etc.
- ISLA funding may not be used to pay image researchers or research assistants.
- Image grants are not intended to defray the cost of cover/overleaf art or images, nor to commission the creation of new artworks.
- If awarded, the faculty member must acknowledge financial support in the acknowledgment of the book and provide ISLA with a hard copy of the book once published.
Indexing Grants
Quality indexing is important within the publication process. Indexing Grants are awarded to defray indexing costs associated with hiring a professional indexer.
- Applications for Indexing Grants are submitted electronically and are only considered after a contract is offered by the publisher.
- Applications must be accompanied by an estimate or invoice provided by the indexer or publisher. These costs should be explicitly tied to word or page counts.
- Indexing Grants are limited to $1,200.
- If awarded, the faculty member must acknowledge financial support in the acknowledgment of the book and provide ISLA with a hard copy of the book once published.
