1916 Conference in Dublin

ISLA offers three categories of grants for regular faculty members to plan conferences, lecture series, and visiting artist events. Large Henkels Grants range from $3,000 to $20,000. Small Henkels Lecture Grants and Mini-Conference Grants are available in amounts up to $3,000. For conferences whose major sponsors are other Institutes or Centers on campus, a faculty member in the College of Arts and Letters may apply for ISLA cosponsorship for up to $5,000.

Be sure to review the application procedures before submitting your grant request. Successful applicants should be sure to credit ISLA appropriately

Please note that ISLA has an academic conferences unit to assist College of Arts and Letters faculty with every step of the process of planning for a conference or lecture, including space arrangements and budget. These services are available for events with total budgets of $10,000 or more.

To learn more, contact Lauri Roberts (631-1468) or Kristen Garvin-Podell (631-7291) at 356 O’Shaughnessy. It is advisable to contact the academic conferences office as early in the planning process as possible.

It is essential for all Henkels Grants that the application be drawn up and submitted by the organizing faculty member.

Grant categories

Large Henkels Grant ($3,000 - $20,000)

Biannual deadlines: second Tuesday in October and February – October 13, 2020 and February 9, 2021.

Proposals are due one year in advance of event.

Grants of up to $20,000 to cover the costs of:

  • an academic conference on campus or in one of the University’s Global Gateways,
  • a series of lectures or performances, or

Departments, institutes, and interdisciplinary groups can bring scholars to Notre Dame for two or more days of public events including a lecture, colloquium, panel, or performance. Visiting scholars and performers must be among the leaders in their field. While all events may not result in a publication, the Institute expects that proposals will be designed with the goal of having a lasting effect beyond a series of lectures or performances. In addition to the support requested from ISLA, please list all other sources.

All ISLA Large Grants are reviewed by an anonymous panel of Arts and Letters faculty. The review process takes about a month to complete.

Faculty are limited to two Large Henkels Grants in this category in a five-year period.

Small Henkels Lecture or Mini-Conference Grant (up to $3,000)

ISLA can provide partial support (up to $3,000) for academic conferences or lectures held on the Notre Dame campus. Preference is given to projects that have matching funds from other sources (e.g., foundations, departments or institutes). In addition to the support you are requesting from ISLA, please list all other sources, the amount you are requesting from those sources, and contact information for those sources (name, email address, phone number).

Faculty are limited to one Small Henkels Lecture Grant or Mini-Conference Grant award per academic year.
