National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Stipends

(Internal Competition)

Internal application deadline: Friday, August 29, 2008

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Summer Stipends provide individuals with an opportunity to pursue research in the humanities that contributes to scholarly knowledge or to the public's understanding of the humanities. Projects should be completed during the tenure of an award or represent part of a long-term endeavor. Recipients might produce scholarly articles, a monograph on a specialized subject, a book on a broad topic, an archaeological site report, a translation, an edition, a database, or other scholarly tools. NEH will support nearly any activity that will give benefit to the humanities.

The program offers grants of $6,000 (taxable income) for summer research projects in the humanities. The NEH requires applicants to be nominated by their institution. Therefore, the Dean of the College of Arts & Letters nominates up to two. ISLA offers the same level of summer support for projects that are nominated by Notre Dame but which do not gain NEH funding. Stipends from ISLA are awarded under the assumption that the nominee will return to Notre Dame for the following academic year.

The NEH submission deadline is October 1, 2008.

Internal competition deadline: August 29, 2008 at 5 p.m. Contact Ken Garcia (631-6494); garcia.56@nd.edu for more information. The NEH website is located at: www.neh.gov/grants/guidelines/stipends.html
