Mini-Conferences

The Institute occasionally provides partial support (up to $5,000) for academic conferences held on the Notre Dame campus. Preference is given to projects that have matching funds from other sources (e.g., foundations, departments or institutes. This funding category can also be used to supplement departmental funds in bringing visiting speakers to campus. Departments who wish to invite a leading figure in their academic field can apply for support under this program.

Connections with the creative and performing arts are also encouraged, such as a movie showing, a theatre production, or an art show.

Recipients of awards for $5,000.00 are required to submit a one page report, in hard copy to the ISLA office, outlining how their funding was used and what its outcomes were. Please submit your report within one month of the completion of the project for which the funding was used.

Please submit your application to the ISLA Director in hard copy. Please include

  • Information about the intellectual issues to be addressed by the conference / speaker.
  • Information about the audience to be targeted (for example, the general undergraduate population; faculty and students in a particular discipline; the wider Michiana community, etc.)
  • A list of participants and an indication of whether they have committed to participating. Please include a brief resume or biography of each.

A detailed budget, including: honoraria, travel costs, accommodation, meals and the cost of campus activities associated with the scholars’ visits. (NB: ISLA funding cannot be spent on honoraria for participants employed at Notre Dame.)

A full description of the schedule of events planned for each scholar’s visit including both formal and informal occasions. The dates need not be final in the proposal; however, we must know the general program for each scholar’s visit.

  • Plans to publicize the conference / event.

Please note that the College now also has an events coordinator, who manages the college calendar as well as assists faculty with every step of the process of planning for a conference, including space arrangements and budget. For more information contact Harriet Baldwin at 246 O’Shaughnessy (hbaldwin@nd.edu, 1-7864). It is advisable to contact this office as early in the planning process as possible. The organizing faculty member and/or sponsoring unit of the conference shall be responsible for any expenses that exceed the income for the conference as outlined in the budget proposal. The chair or person in charge of the sponsoring unit and faculty member will be asked to sign that they have seen this statement and to provide a University FOAPAL number for this purpose.
