International Faculty Exchange Initiative Grants
Faculty members are invited to engage in cooperative research, teaching, and study ventures with colleagues at institutions in other countries, preferably non-English speaking. The best form of cooperative work is reciprocal; the University thus seeks to support proposals for true exchanges, whereby a Notre Dame faculty member will be hosted at a foreign institution and subsequently serve as host him- or herself at Notre Dame, for a colleague from that institution. The length of a visit may vary, from two weeks to a month. ISLA will provide funds for the Notre Dame faculty member or the guest to support travel and living expenses, up to $3,000. If both parties desire and agree to do so, this funding may be split between the Notre Dame faculty member and the guest (each up to $1,500, for example).
Note: Original receipts must be submitted with the reimbursement request to document all expenses.
Proposals should include:
- Project description
- Project, lecture series, and/or course title; dates of trip and stay at host institution; name of host or sponsoring department; name of host faculty member; description of activities to be undertaken at host institution; and provisions for lodging and on-site support
- Provisional budget
- Endorsement from the department chair or director of academic unit
Within one month of return to ND
- Project description for hosting foreign guest at Notre Dame
- Name of faculty guest, project, lecture series, and/or course title; dates of trip and stay at Notre Dame; name of sponsoring department; name of host faculty member; description of activities to be undertaken at Notre Dame; and provisions for lodging and on-campus support
- Provisional budget, sources of funding
Recipients of international faculty exchange initiative grants will be expected to play a key role as host of their faculty guests, i.e. to coordinate events enabling social, academic, and pedagogical integration of faculty guest from abroad during their stay on campus.
Upon successful completion of one cycle of reciprocal exchange, Notre Dame faculty recipients are expected to submit a two page final report. Faculty members who complete one successful exchange cycle will be given priority for future exchange funding in view of promoting continuity in the creation of international research groups involving Notre Dame faculty and students.
