Howard Foundation Faculty Fellowships for 2005-2006 (Internal Competition)
Each year, the Howard Foundation offers faculty fellowships of $25,000 to mid-career faculty. The Foundation’s aim is to “support people in the middle stages of their careers whose work to date is evidence of their promise and achievement.” The candidates should normally hold the rank of assistant or associate professor. The fellowships augment paid sabbatical leaves so that faculty may have a full year in which to pursue their work. The disciplines targeted for fellowships rotate on a five-year cycle. In 2006-2007, support is being offered for projects in Anthropology, Sociology, and Political Science.
ISLA coordinates the nomination process. Please submit five (5) copies of a pre-proposal to the ISLA office (101 O’Shaughnessy) by Wednesday, September 14, 2005. In your pre-proposal, briefly describe your project, its significance both in your field of specialization and outside it, your qualifications to undertake it, and its current status. The Howard application form asks for a three-page description of the project, twenty pages of supporting material, and three letters of recommendation. You may use the three-page description for your pre-proposal, but ISLA reviewers do not need the letters of recommendation. Sample supporting materials from musicians and visual artists will help the selection committee, but we do not need the full twenty pages. Please attach your curriculum vitae. The University of Notre Dame must forward the names of its nominees to the Howard Foundation by October 17, 2005. The Howard Foundation will then contact each of the nominees directly, who must then submit their applications by the end of November, 2005. For more information, please see the Howard Foundation Website.
