Equipment Restoration and Renewal (Internal Competition)
The Graduate School provides University funds to restore or replace equipment required for current research or other scholarly activities. Proposals for single capital investment needs with a cost greater than $50,000 are being solicited, although requests below this amount may be submitted. This single capital investment should be one single piece of equipment or an integrated set of equipment components (e.g., a video recording system). "Equipment" also includes library collections, the replacement of musical instruments, integrated art and film materials, and other materials that have an expected service life of more than one year.
If applying to the Equipment Restoration and Renewal program for a library collection, the proposal must be for a specific library collection that will serve a specific scholarly project, including faculty and graduate students. The research is of central interest; the library collection is to be considered as the tool to do the (cutting-edge, collaborative, significant) research. The primary focus of the proposal, then, must be the research agenda for a given scholar or team of scholars. The research agenda should include future plans for applications to external granting agencies (including specifics on what agencies, what grants, and why these are appropriate), and a long-term plan of collaboration, publication, and other scholarly work, which depends on the library collection. It is strongly recommended that applications include proof of collaboration with the library faculty, insofar as we need to be sure that the library will be ready to catalogue, archive, etc. these materials before we sign off on the acquisition.
Arts and Letters Faculty are encouraged to submit proposals to this program even if the proposed value of the integrated materials/equipment does not amount to $50,000. Faculty are also strongly encouraged to turn in a draft proposal in advance of the deadline for feedback and possible suggestions for improvement. Proposals should be submitted to Assoc. Dean Gretchen Reydams-Schils (100 O'Shaughnessy Hall) no later than October 4, 2007. The College of Arts and Letters will screen the A&L proposals and can only forward three proposals to the graduate school.
