Catholic Traditions and Faculty Engagement

The Institute for Scholarship in the Liberal Arts (ISLA), in conjunction with the department of Theology, the Graduate School, and the Provost’s office administers a faculty development program aimed at enabling Notre Dame scholars in departments across campus to engage the Catholic intellectual, theological and spiritual tradition and to think about how it can inform their own academic disciplines. The program is based on the traditional goals of the Catholic liberal arts tradition: the unity of knowledge, the need for scholars to go beyond specialized study in the pursuit of wisdom, and the full engagement of Christian thought with the thought of the times. Our goal is to create a vibrant community of Catholic intellectual and spiritual life by providing faculty with a broad background in the Catholic tradition and encouraging them to integrate perspectives learned from it into their own scholarship. Toward this end, we invite faculty to participate in the following initiatives:
